When we relax deeply our body intuitively heals and recharges.
Through the stimulation of the vagus nerve our parasympathetic nervous system excites all the processes involved in growth, healing, repair and rejuvenation. This activation essentially reverses the physical, emotional and mental effects of stress and is particularly important if your sympathetic or flight and fight nervous system is continually triggered by your everyday life. When the relaxation response is activated your brain relaxes into a deeply healing theta brain wave state, that restores the peace and equilibrium in your nervous system, calms your mind and emotions. In this state you tap into deep intuitive wisdom. With regular practice of deep relaxation you build vagal nerve tone that gives you a resilience to the stresses of modern life and protects you from the negative effects of chronic stress. You become calmer, less reactive and it takes a lot more to stress you. Physically you lower your blood pressure, breathing and heart rate, optimise your cellular pH environment and oxygen uptake, relieve muscle tension and fatigue, promote healthy digestion, and strengthen your immune system.
